Definition

Business-to-Business (B2B) exchanges are electronic marketplaces in the Internet where suppliers and buyers interact to conduct transactions. B2B marketplaces can be defined as a World Wide Web site where goods and services can be bought from a wide range of suppliers.1)
Online exchanges vary according to the size and number of companies using them and the type of commodity traded. There are successful exchanges in markets as diverse as energy, textiles and logistics. Online exchanges allow participants to trade straightforwardly with a wide variety of buyers and sellers. Two of the biggest factors driving the growth of exchanges are that large businesses can use them to reduce stock holdings while small businesses can bid collectively to earn volume discounts or to jointly deliver a large contract.

Types of Marketplaces / Exchanges

There are three types of e-marketplaces marketplaces based around a specific industry sectors; marketplaces based around products and services; marketplaces focused on the functions.2)
  1. Marketplaces based around a specific industry sectors are called vertical marketplaces. Petroleum industry is an example. Those help buyers source goods and services that are largely specific to industries.
  2. The type of marketplace which is formed around a wider supply market that cuts across several industries is called horizontal marketplace. Examples include the marketplaces for maintenance, repair and operating (MRO) goods such as safety and office supplies. The value of the horizontal marketplaces is that they efficiently match the needs of the one with the offerings of the other.
  3. The marketplaces focusing on functions gain value from concentrating functional capabilities and quality services. For example they help HR departments manage employee benefits; help companies dispose of excess inventory and so on.

Barriers in Usage

Trust is an important issue for B2B e-marketplaces. The most important trust issues for participation in B2B e-marketplaces are the following3):
  • security,
  • confidentiality,
  • transparency, in particular of the terms and conditions of the contract and the transaction procedure.

Trading modells for B2B exchanges

  1. Catalogue aggregators – must be neutral, independent sites that are operated by a third party if they are to bring many competing sellers together to earn buyers trust in the information on the site.

  3. Klasifikasi B2B (Business to Business) Exchange

Systematic Sourcing :  pembelian dilaksanakan dalam jangka panjang (hubungan antar supplier dengan pembeli).
Spot Sourcing             :  pembelian tidak direncanakan, dibuat seperti membeli kebutuhan.
Vertical Exchange      :  suatu pertukaran yang anggotanya adalah di (dalam) [satu/orang] industry atau industry segmen.

Systematic Sourcing: Hubungan Buyer-Supplier dalam Konsep Lean Enterprise

Dalam Lean, hubungan pembelian dan penjualan haruslah memberikan value bagi kedua belah pihak, buyer dan supplier. Untuk memenuhinya, sangat penting dan masuk akal jika supplier diberikan ‘alat’ dan kemampuan untuk sukses. Pertama-tama, segala yang terjadi antara kedua pihak harus transparan. Artinya, buyer harus mengetahui berapa modal yang harus dikeluarkan supplier untuk memproduksi komponen yang dibelinya. Fokus buyer bukan lagi memaksimalkan profitnya sendiri dan meminimalisir profit supplier. Kedua perusahaan harus bekerjasama dalam meningkatkan value secara keseluruhan.

Harga dari tiap-tiap item memang tidak harus dijabarkan dalam kontrak outsource yang disiapkan supplier; namun kontrak tersebut harus menyebutkan metode yang digunakan untuk menentukan harga-harga. Buyer dan supplier harus membuat kesepakatan dalam penentuan harga. Harga, misalnya, dapat ditentukan berdasarkan modal supplier ditambah presentase profit yang masuk akal. Harga yang ada, jika memungkinkan, dapat diturunkan dengan beberapa cara. Salah satu cara adalah dengan program productivity improvement. Buyer dapat menantang supplier untuk menurunkan harga dengan menjalankan program Lean Six Sigma yang dapat membantu menghemat biaya dan meningkatkan produktifitas. Jika program dijalankan bersama-sama, bentuk-bentuk gain-sharing yang akan digunakan harus jelas dijabarkan dan dipahami kedua pihak.

Metode Improvement untuk Kualitas Hubungan Buyer-Supplier

Seperti yang dilakukan oleh Toyota dengan para pemasoknya, buyer harus memastikan bahwa supplier memiliki tools dan kemampuan yang cukup untuk melakukan perbaikan (program improvement). Sebuah organisasi yang Lean harus membantu supplier-suppliernya dalam melakukan beberapa aktifitas improvement, seperti:

Pelatihan dan implementasi Value Stream Mapping (VSM)
Pelatihan dan implementasi 5S
Melakukan Kaizen event yang fokus kepada cellular manufacturing / one-piece flow, Total Productive Maintenance (TPM), quick changeover (SMED), dan tool dasar Lean lainnya.
Melakukan set-up sistem Kanban.
Jika sebuah perusahaan melakukan investasi yang sedemikian rupa dengan para suppliernya, lingkungan jual beli yang terbentuk akan dipenuhi oleh rasa saling percaya dan kondisi yang dibutuhkan untuk sukses bagi supplier akan tercipta dengan sendirinya. Jika organisasi supplier mengalami kesuksesan, supply chain mereka juga akan membaik; secara keseluruhan, lead time, inventori dan biaya-biaya modal akan dapat dihemat.

Spot Sourcing: Spot sourcing atau pembelian tidak direncanakan dibuat seperti membeli kebutuhan. sesuatu yang tidak bisa di rencanakan atau kebutuhan dadakan contohnya seperti anda membeli sapu karena sapu yang anda gunakan rusak dan anda harus menyapu saat itu juga berarti itu sama dengan anda tidak tau kalau hal itu akan terjadi

Vertical Exchange: Pertukaran yang terjadi antara perusahaan yang membutuhkan material langsung dalam pembuatan produknya. Contoh : perusahaan mie membutuhkan tepung dari perusahaan lain untuk membuat produknya.

Horizontal Exchange: Menjual produk yang tujuannya bukan pada perusahaan khusus melainkan untuk dipakai secara umum oleh banyak perusahaan.
